Freewheelers and Dick Barton on Film24

To my delight this week I've discovered two classic TV drama's from the 1970s are currently getting a rerun on Film24. Both from the former ITV franchise Southern Television, both Freewheelers and Dick Barton Special Agent have appeared on the TV Channel's schedules.

Wendy Padbury Stars In Freewheelers

Freewheelers features Ronald Leigh-Hunt as Colonel Buchan with three young friends including former Dr Who assistant Wendy Padbury tracking down two criminals they originally helped put behind bars in a previous adventure.

Freewheelers production values were to the same high standard of some of the great late 1960s/early 1970s adventure series such as The Saint and The Avengers, featuring a vast array of effects, helicopters, ships, car chases and great theme and incidental music.

Dick Barton Back In Action

Dick Barton - Special Agent is another gem from this golden age of British TV, and starred Tony Vogel recreating the role of Barton, a character whose adventures were followed avidly by listeners on BBC Radio in the 1940s and 50s.
This series originally went out on the ITV network in early 1979 and ran on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in 10 minute instalments over four months.

Unfortunately it never ran to a second series, but is still fondly remembered by anyone caught this great series at the time!

Although Film24 doesnt seem to have these shows broadcasting at any fixed time slots, again, they are well worth checking out on the schedules. If only they still made great shows like these!
