Jonathan Cecil 1939-2011

I'm saddened to hear of the death of actor Jonathan Cecil at the age of 72 on September 22, 2011.

A popular actor of stage, screen and television  from the mid-1960s Jonathan Cecil was best known for playing vicars, silly ass authoritarians and army captains in various series and prominently featured opposite Peter Ustinov in three Hercule Poirot movies in the 1980s.

His one and only Dad's Army appearance was as Captain Cadbury in the TV episode Things That Go Bump In The Night. A role that he never forgot mainly due to the royalty payments for repeat fees that he later joked still popped up decades after he'd made the episode.

Co-incidentally Jonathan Cecil appeared in the very last TV episode of Dad's Army to feature James Beck as Private Walker. He would later replace Beck in the lead role of Beck's ITV sit-com Romany Jones as Jeremy Crichton-Jones.
