Saturday Superstore: Philips Teletext Television

Philips Teletext TV - Radio Times 1980
Fascinating to think that at the turn of the 1980s, if you owned a teletext television you really felt you were on the cutting edge of technology. I loved teletext, paging Ceefax on BBC1 and 2 and Oracle for ITV.

You could get the service to set up latest newsflashes for you on page 150 and check out the latest TV listings on pages 171, 172 and 173.

My favourite page however was the Ceefax test page page 198. This page was frequently used as Ceefax's TV transmission page during the quieter hours of broadcasting in the 1980s (when no programmes filled the schedules). It was also used for promoting subtitles for programmes like Doctor Who and occasionally would test out subtitles of certain shows prior to broadcast.

I always remember reading the subtitles for Arc Of Infinity part 3 in January 1983 on such a test broadcast and learning of a spoiler ahead of broadcast that the Doctor's arch-enemy Omega would return. That was the first and last time I ever read a spoiler for a favourite TV show.

Internet users don't know they're born!
