Those Radio Times - 12 Days Of Christmas: Morecambe and Wise

Morecambe and Wise -
Radio Times, 1977
Welcome to Retrospace's 12 Days Of Christmas...

This Year We're remembering some of the stars who brightened up our Christmases in the golden age of television - the 1970s. I've plummeted my Radio Times archive to bring some rarely seen pictures from the era of some of the decades most celebrated stars.

In the 1970s (and every year since) Christmas wasn't Christmas without the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show. With celebrity guests and magical song and dance routines paying tribute to Hollywood's greatest moments Eric and Ernie perfected the ultimate Christmas Show so much so they are still repeated today.

Morecambe and Wise - Christmas 2011

Several Morecambe and Wise Christmas Shows are been shown over the Christmas period - look out for their 1971 Christmas Show on BBC1 today (11.40am) featuring Shirley Bassey, Andre Preview (I mean Previn) and Glenda Jackson and their 1976 Christmas Show on Boxing Day (BBC1, 12.25pm) featuring Elton John.

Morecambe and Wise - New Years Eve 2011

There are also further Morecambe and Wise specials on New Years Eve Including Morecambe and Wise: The Show That Paul Merton Did, (BBC2, 8pm), the excellent dramatisation of the pairs early years: Eric and Ernie starring Daniel Rigby and Bryan Dick (BBC2, 9pm) and a compilation Parkinson: Morecambe and Wise with Michael Parkinson (BBC2,10.30pm).

  1. The Mr Preview sketch is officially the funniest ever in the history of British tv. Well in my humble opinion anyway. I still cry with laughter every time I watch it.

  2. Agreed - I laugh everytime I see it and that whole Christmas Special is just the perfect Christmas show from the Shirley Bassey bit to the Glenda Jackson dance routine...
