Treading The Boards: James Beck in Goldilocks And The Three Bears (1958-1959)

Carrying on Dad's Army stars appearances in pantomime over the years this Treading The Boards post takes us back to Christmas 1958 in which a young James Beck (nearly a decade before he became Private Walker) featured in York Theatre Royal's presentation of Goldilocks And The Three Bears.

Goldliocks and The Three Bears commenced at York Theatre Royal on Christmas Eve, 1958 and ran until Saturday, 10th January 1959.

Featuring members of the York Repertory Company the production featured  Carol Coombe as Good Fairy Snowflake, Trevor Bannister (years before his success in David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd's Are You Being Served?) as Demon Gumboil, June Barry as Goldilocks, William Coombe as Mr.Tree, Jean Alexander (later to find fame in Coronation Street as Hilda Ogden), and James Beck and Jeffrey Dench as Goldilocks Step-Sisters Cynthia and Eunice.

  • If anybody has any memories of this production, newspaper cuttings or ephemera, I'd love to hear from you so we could feature them in a future post.
