|John Le Mesurier Centenary on BBC Radio 4 Extra|
John was not only famous as Sergeant Wilson in Dad's Army but made hundreds of appearances in supporting roles in many productions on stage, film, television and radio from the 1930s until his death in 1983.
John's radio work is often overlooked apart from his contributions to Dad's Army and It Sticks Out Half A Mile, so its nice that BBC Radio 4 Extra began the celebrations of his centenary by broadcasting two rarely heard radio plays over the weekend.
In The Kamikaze Ground Staff Reunion Dinner by Stewart Parker, the men who serviced Japanese attack planes stir memories and plan a new mission. The Kamikaze Ground Staff Reunion Dinner was originally broadcast in 1979 and was broadcast on Saturday at 06:00 Hrs, 16:00 Hrs and Sunday morning at 04:00 Hrs. It is currently available to Listen again on the BBC iPlayer for the next five days.
The Second Play was The Lancaster Gate End by Alun Owen in which contrary views are swapped in a series of blunt exchanges between two park regulars. Alun Owen - The Lancaster Gate End was originally broadcast in June 1982 and was repeated on Saturday at 07:00 Hrs, 17:00 Hrs and Sunday Morning at 05:00 Hrs. It is also available to Listen again on the BBC iPlayer for the next five days.
BBC Radio 4 Extra will continue to remember John Le Mesurier with a broadcast of Stephen Fagan's The Intersection next weekend and of course there is the regular repeat of Dad's Army on Thursday.
